About The Exophthalmometer

This HEM300 exophthalmometer is used for precise exophthalmos measurements (e.g. exophthalmic goiter). The basis of the measure for exophthalmos determination using the Hertel version is the outer orbital rim (orbital wall) and the apex of the cornea. The integral refraction mirrors with millimeter scales for the left-hand and right-hand measuring halves of the exophthalmometer are calibrated so that the zero mark on the scale will be located in the plane of the resting points of the supports.

For exophthalmos measurements the supports are placed against the two temporal orbital walls so that the orbital rim contacts the deepest point of the supports.

What Is Exophthalmos ?

Exophthalmos is a method used to measure the protrusion of the eyeball.

How to Measure Exophtalmos ?

There are two methods to measure exophthalmos, Including the ordinary scale measurement and the Hertel ophthalmoscope measurement.

How To Measure by Ordinary Scale?
sing a special transparent ruler or an ordinary ruler, the zero point is placed on the lateral temporal orbital margin, and the client is asked to look forward. The examiner observes the scale of the corneal apex on the ruler from the side (the vertical distance from the temporal orbital margin to the corneal apex), which is the exophthalmos. In the same way both eyes are examined and recorded, this method can only make a general measurement.
How to Measure by Hertel Method?
It is a commonly used and more accurate inspection method. The eye protrusion meter is mainly composed of a flat rod with a scale and two measuring instruments. One measuring device is fixed at one end of the bar, and the other can slide freely on the bar to adapt to different orbital distances, and the orbital distance value can be read from the scale of the bar. The measuring instrument is equipped with a small scale plate and two flat mirrors crossed at a 45° Angle to reflect the scale plate value and the corneal vertex image respectively.
Attentions During Measurement?
During the measurement, the tester and the client sit opposite each other, insert the upper notch of the ophthalmoscope into the temporal orbital margin of the client, and ask the client to look forward. At this time, the value of the corneal apex seen in the two flat mirrors is the exophthalmos. At the same time, the values of two orbital distances were obtained from the scale on the flat bar, and the orbital distances and the values of each eyeball prominence were recorded. The same orbital distance should be used for follow-up observation.
